This post was originally posted on Abhigyan Abhikaushalam Students’ Forum by the same author.

Guys !!!
there's a proposal to upgrade IIITM Gwalior to IIT gwalior ...
Bt the problem is in implementation ...
May be we can see the such upgradation in future ... :
Reference :
Gwalior’s institute may not be upgraded to IIT

But on another question on the issue of upgradation of ABV-IIITM (Atal Bihari Vajpayee Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management), Gwalior to an IIT raised by Maya Singh in Rajya Sabha, Purandeswari, in a written reply to this question said that, “Madhya Pradesh is already having various centrally funded technical educational institutions viz MANIT (Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology), Bhopal; ABV-IIITM, Gwalior; PDPM-IIITDM (Pt Dwarka Prasad Mishra Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing, Jabalpur and IIM (Indian Institute of Management) at Indore. Further, IISER (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research) has been approved in Bhopal. Planning commission has given its ‘in-principle’ approval for setting up a School of Planning and Architecture in Bhopal. At present, there is no proposal to upgrade ABV-IIITMG, Gwalior to an IIT.

Do we really need to be converted

On April 5th, 2009 ipg_200611 says:

What I believe is that IIIT gwalior should not be converted into IIT..IIITs are having their own identity and they are specialized institute of ministry of india. If we make them IIT their identity will be dissolved just like ROORKEE..which previously has its own importance. IIIT has potential students , funds and infrastructure to make themselves upto level of IIT.. but it would surely take some time.
IITs are brand because of their Alumni.

Once I met a guy in IIM-Ahmedabad his name was "Vaibhav Bhamoria " h was ISM dhanbad passout. I just said that ISM should be converted to IIT ..he said that there is strong resistance from the Alumni as they dont want to liquefy the identity of being the best mining institute of india by making it IIT.

Government has plan to open around 15-16 IIIT's all over india in different states ..this will surely give a momentum in the enhancement of the publicity of the IITs...And IIIT gwalior is the 1st among those IIITs...

Match the standards not the name:)

I strongly disagree with the fact of converting the IIIT into an IIT coz what i persinally feel is that the name doesn't matter, we rather need to match the standards. Alumni will always prove to be the magic. Also including Computer Science and Electronic engg will help us make a strong alumni. Better faculty is a need.

IDENTITY..............?
where is d identity of IIITM,,, no where.. really no where...ask them those.. who are in the industries... d companies don't know the name of our Insti......

they dont know IIITM .... do u believe it?!!

but dis is true....

accept it.. every time when ever someone from d placement cell talk a HR over d phone phone they give a detail about our insti... only few companies know the name.... dose who are regular...

i do strongly believe ....
we need to be converted to IIT or IIIT, der is s need of the time. in case of ISM dey hav der level and they r know to the wolrd quite over a long time.. but we dont meet d level till yet....

no one knows US(IIITM)

n one thing more...why u people dont use ABV-IIITM, its the name, not IIITM, (IIITM is d old name), even der is IIITM in kerala.

do u people really USE ABV-IIITM.... u DONT use dis...
so accept d truth

either use ABV-IIITM as the name or else let it converted into IIT or IIIT.........!!!!

den there will b a better tomorrow for this ABV-IIITM gwalior

I too am of the opinion that it should remain as as IIITM. Id rather them take of the ABV from the name but I doubt thats going to happen either.

I do agree that more ppl know about IIT than IIITM or the other IIITs, and it would certainly help placements of the next few batches if it were to be converted to an IIT.

But overall, I think IIITs can create a brand of their own which in the distant future has a chance of becoming a better brand than the IITs, as we have fewer departments where the jobs are at.
Eventually students are going to give preference to departments then colleges when they pick a college.

I do believe, we should not be converted to IIT and remain IIITM. Agree to some of the stuff said that IITs are brands setting themselves up and having 50 yrs of backing and identity. The benefit of getting converted to IIT is to have instant recogintion and perhaps short term preferability but bad part would be that we would become one of the perhaps 10 IITs and loose any chance of creating a separate identity. Perhaps we can never achieve that and remain a second tier institute all over but i believe that we have strong potential to be so and should not follow short-cut.
