GOOD DAYS FOR IIIT's
  The government on 18th of March 2013 introduced the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bill, 2013, in the Lok Sabha, which wants to establish 20 such institutions (new IIIT's) in partnership with the private sector.
 
Once approved by Parliament, the law will give IIIT's, including the four existing ones (IIIT Gwalior, IIIT Allahabad, IIIT Jabalpur, IIIT Kancheepuram), the status of institutes of national importance (INI) on a par with Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) & Indian Institute of Management (IIM).
 
The cabinet had cleared the Bill on 17 August. The IIITs will be established with an initial investment of Rs.128 crore. While half of the investment will be made by the central government, 35% of the cost will come from the states and remaining 15% from industry partners.
 
The government had set up four IIITs in Gwalior, Allahabad, Jabalpur and Kancheepuram in the 11th Five-year Plan that ended on March 2012. These institutes are now considered deemed universities, given through an executive directive, whereas national importance or central university statuses are legislative decisions.

Bt the problem is in implementation ...
May be we can see the such upgradation in future ... :

But on another question on the issue of upgradation of ABV-IIITM (Atal Bihari Vajpayee Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management), Gwalior to an IIT raised by Maya Singh in Rajya Sabha, Purandeswari, in a written reply to this question said that, “Madhya Pradesh is already having various centrally funded technical educational institutions viz MANIT (Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology), Bhopal; ABV-IIITM, Gwalior; PDPM-IIITDM (Pt Dwarka Prasad Mishra Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing, Jabalpur and IIM (Indian Institute of Management) at Indore. Further, IISER (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research) has been approved in Bhopal. Planning commission has given its ‘in-principle’ approval for setting up a School of Planning and Architecture in Bhopal. At present, there is no proposal to upgrade ABV-IIITMG, Gwalior to an IIT.

Do we really need to be converted

What I believe is that IIIT gwalior should not be converted into IIT..IIITs are having their own identity and they are specialized institute of ministry of india. If we make them IIT their identity will be dissolved just like ROORKEE..which previously has its own importance. IIIT has potential students , funds and infrastructure to make themselves upto level of IIT.. but it would surely take some time.
IITs are brand because of their Alumni.

Once I met a guy in IIM-Ahmedabad his name was "Vaibhav Bhamoria " h was ISM dhanbad passout. I just said that ISM should be converted to IIT ..he said that there is strong resistance from the Alumni as they dont want to liquefy the identity of being the best mining institute of india by making it IIT.

Government has plan to open around 15-16 IIIT's all over india in different states ..this will surely give a momentum in the enhancement of the publicity of the IITs...And IIIT gwalior is the 1st among those IIITs...

I strongly disagree with the fact of converting the IIIT into an IIT coz what i persinally feel is that the name doesn't matter, we rather need to match the standards. Alumni will always prove to be the magic. Also including Computer Science and Electronic engg will help us make a strong alumni. Better faculty is a need.

1. EFC approved the proposal for Establishment of IIITM, Gwalior: October 1995

Institute was established as a National Resource Institutein the cusp area of IIT and IIM for the integration of IT and Management
Two post graduation programmes one and half years and other is two years respectively.
the block grant pattern of sundry as applicable to IITs and IIMs will be applicable to the present proposal also.
In the IX plan Non Recurring fund was sanction Rs. 48.00 crore and recurring expenditure Rs. 1369 lakhs.
The proposal to introduce five and a half years integrated programme for 10+2 students in IX th Plan .

IIITM-G over the Years :The Beginning

Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management Gwalior was established by Govt. of India through a cabinet decision taken in October 1995 based on a report of a working group (May 1995) of All India Council for Technical Education(AICTE) constituted, consisting of eminent professionals, academicians and policy makers in the areas of Information Technology, Management and Communication, to deliberate on the issue of IT integration . The working group prepared a basic document underlining the need of establishing a National Centre in the area of IT.

Government of Madhya Pradesh allotted land free of cost, first at the village Sonjana, on 16th January 1996. The foundation Stone of the Institute was laid on Jan 17, 1996 by Late Shrimant Madhav Rao Scindia, the then Minister of Human Resource Development. Govt of India.

. The first meeting of IIITM Gwalior Society was held on 17th January 1997 at Shastri Bhavan, New Delhi. The society was registered on 30 January 1997.

Consequently, the Indian Institute of Information Technology & Management (IIITM) was established at Gwalior as a centrally funded autonomous institution registered under the Societies’ Registration Act and sprawled over 60 hectares of land to build the Institute campus. The primary objectives of the institute are to create facilities for education, training, research, consultancy and professional development in the areas of Information Technology and Management in an integrated manner. The objectives of the institute were framed so as to create facilities for education, research, consultancy and professional development in the cusp area of IT and management through seamless integration. The institute was founded to bridge the gap between the technocrats and the managers and produce the new generation of entrepreneurs

The first director Prof DP Agrawal, joined the institute in October 1998. The first course of the institute started in July 1998, PGDMIT with intake of 30 students. Subsequently PGDIT in 1999 with an intake of 15, Ph.D. Programme in July 2000 and 5-Yr. Dual degree PG programme also in July 2000. Full time faculty joined in August 1999. .The institute was conferred, by the Ministry of HRD on the recommendation of the UGC, Deemed-to-be-University status in March 2001.

In the starting the classes of the institute were held in Madhav Institute of Science and Technology, Gwalior. The MITS had provided nearly 15,000 sq. feet covered area in the high voltage laboratory complex of MITS without charging a monthly rent with a proviso that the permanent fixtures created shall become the property of MITS. There after the construction of the campus the classes were shifted to institute in July 2002. In the starting the institute was named as Indian institute of information technology and management (IIITM) Gwalior. In December 2002 ABV was added to its name on the birthday of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, then prime minister of India by decision of Government.

IIITM-G over the Years: Fast Progressing Institute

The institute worked on a fast track to evolve itself into a world-class post-graduate education and research institution in IT and management education. It integrates management as a concept with technology as a platform to create a synergistic approach for solving emerging industry problems. The Institute now is a dynamic source of intellectual energy with strong connection to the business world, its focus being on collaborative efforts like flexible curriculum design, curriculum delivery, mentoring of students by professionals from the corporate world, summer internship projects and final placements. Over the years the institute has been providing highly respected Techno-Managers to the IT industry doing various business functions using IT as resources. The graduates who have already passed out are on par with the best available in the country and its alumni are working in front ranking organizations at the national and international level. Institute is developing a research environment where creativity and innovativeness is appreciated in all their facets consistent with most exacting research standards globally.
