Interview with Srikar: Study Days @ IIITM Gwalior : A jaunty Journey …

Srikar Velichety: I often raise point against the rationality of customizing everything in IIITM, as putting daily notices, guest lectures, extra classes blah-blah [:O].
Contrarily, there are other half that keep plying flesh to veridical face of IIITM.
Srikar is a proud pladin of that other half.

Thank you sir for volunteering in our cause and adding infixes on behalf of tardiest alumnus.

Sidhi Baat (The Interview):

Name: Srikar Velichety
Batch: IPG2004-Mtech
Location: Pune
Organization: Amdocs

Q.1. Your Intro ? (the first question for every IIITMite in so called intro :))
Srikar:
I was probably the only one so far who never had any nickname. I presently work for Amdocs in their development center at Pune.

Q. 2. Define IIITM in your word?
Srikar:
Its a place where you can do anything and everything. The kind of freedom you get at this place, I bet you will never find any where else in the world. And you have the most important resource at your disposal for all endeavors i.e., time.

Q. 3.The most memorable moment @ IIITM ?
Srikar:
The whole journey of 5 years was memorable. I will cherish this period for the rest of my life.

Q. 4.Technology and Management in your words, how it become more special when it comes for IIITM ?
Srikar:
Frankly speaking, I am still confused on how technology and management are related :) How ever I have had a bumpy ride (in fact a 5 year long one) while trying to relate both of them . And in the end, I could come up with some substantial conclusions. A strong exposure to technology with a flair of management brings in the best in an individual.

Q. 5.Your experience and strategy @ your work place: how did you develop your skills from null to pointer, please give us a biographical detail .
Srikar:
I am still at the beginning of my professional life and hence its too immature to comment on this issue at this point of time. However I can surely say that the environment at IIITM had made me more inquisitive, agile and independent. Today, as I carry forward these qualities into the professional world, I find myself comfortable at the workplace.

Q. 6. A message to your all juniors, (something you aspired most @ IIITM and want the same in your juniors) …
Srikar:
I have always believed in the saying "A pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity where as and optimist sees an opportunity in every difficulty". Whether it is a difficulty or an opportunity get the best out of it. Never get disheartened with something bad that you find. And most importantly make full and propitious use of your time. This is the resource you will miss badly once you pass out of the institute.

Q. 7. IIITM on lighter note: eg: IIITM is getting more greener with times, what do you think ???
Srikar:
The past one year had seen a lot of improvement on all fronts. The institute had improved the resources both on the physical and intellectual front. And resources continue to pour in into the institute. Its left to the students to make the full use of these.

What recruiters want: An HR perspectives: Mr. S. Majumdar in campus ...

In Changing IIITM, there are more shares for new students than anyone ever expected to have in any semester so far. Once again the SH2 Syndrome caught on highest Celsius point of managerial enlightenment.
In a series of guest lectures yesterday Mr. S. Majumdar, General Manager (HR & IR), J. K. Tyre and Industries Ltd. has shared his life experience with students of management.

The lively presentation of Mr.
Mr. S. Majumdar spellbound everyone. It was an exemplary, how one can effectively bound audiences for hours in only four slides comparing to those more than hundred slides of well known technical lectures[:O] of SH2.

Mr. S. Majumdar

At many reference places one can easily find this equation:
(Success= Brain + Hard work + Luck)
But, what about :

Success = Brain x Hard work x Luck !

very strange ? Right !
Real life experiences are just reverse what our pedagogy teaches.
Mr. S. Majumdar is a living example of unconventional knowledge derived by strong moral values.

Here are those Rare Four slides:
slide one
Your Style

* Give target dates and stick to them come what may or inform the concerned person in advance: commitment oriented.
* Not tell small lies.
* Stop using Pakistani logic: irrefutable because it is totally childish.
* Be punctual.
* Stop talking loosely.
* Stop talking on mobiles if somebody is already in conversation with us(05 seconds to say I am busy and will call back later is acceptable).
* Accept that we do not know everything (of our profession or even our company).
* Work with professionalism Distinguish between manipulation and influence.

slide two
Expectations

* Follow some expected business conventions (even if they are against our personal beliefs).
* Become thick skinned from remarks by others.
* Become process and documentation oriented.
* Standardize our process through process charts and check-sheets.
* Assign responsibilities for jobs with tangible deliverables.
* Stick to our commitments even if the job has been volunteered by us and accept criticism if we do not deliver as committed (we are not absolved of our responsibility even if we have volunteered).
* Agree that ours is not the only way: other perspectives are also possible.
* Become dispensable.(we are still being taught to be indispensable :O)

slide three
Your nature

* Maintain confidentiality: we should not try and extract extra popularity mileage by disclosing what we are not authorized to do.
* Have as much discussion as required before a decision is made but once the decision is made, we all abide by it and defend it even if we have personal opinion on it.
* Agree that sometimes / most times democratic decisions are not made in which case also above rule holds.
* Use our experience and capabilities to find solutions rather than criticize and say ‘NO’.
* Disagree without being disagreeable.
* Have heated arguments but do not carry it home.

He discussed the issues related to schedule pressure and software project management. He showed that schedule pressure is brought about by a variety of factors, such as; lack of experience, amount of re-work, lagging behind the scheduled project completion time, technological changes, discrepancy in estimation of size of the project, effort required etc. He also explained how a software size is a primary cost factor in most software project estimation models.

Prof. Ashok Wahi talked about the software risk management and its solutions. He said that the failure to predict and prevent risk can lead to costly delays, revenue loss, increased stress on team members, a lesser product and even project failure. He did a proper software risk analysis and risk resolution was presented to the participants. The next topic on which he talked was “Challenges of managing large software projects”. He talked on visions like multi-way reviews with management at every stage at frequent intervals, creating cause champions at every section of the process, and optimizing the large scale changes undertaken by adopting business process re-engineering. Some very good tips were also given by him to manage large projects.

The whole five years were memorable and every second of that is very special. I experienced almost every flavor of life. Friendship, love, sadness, fight and protest as well. I think the most memorable time was 3 months of B.Tech project when we turned the Lab2 into bedroom cum kitchen cum gaming zone. Another case was...some management paper in 10th sem. Naval Vajpyee sir told us that he doesn't want us write essay. Write as much as required and to the point. Unfortunately i took his words literally and answered all the 5 questions in one and half page. It took so much of my management and negotiation skills to get A in that :).

Q. 4.Technology and Management in your words, how it become more special when it comes for IIITM ?
Rajeev:
Technology is all about building applications and solutions.....where as Management is an art of convincing customers to pay you for that. Q. 6. A message to your all juniors, (something you aspired most @ IIITM and want the same in your juniors) …
Rajeev:
Maintain a perfect balance between academics and extra curricular activities. Both are equally important. Party as much as possible and Read whatever interest you. Q. 7. IIITM on lighter note: eg: IIITM is getting more greener with times, what do you think ???
Rajeev:
I totally agree. Ratio has shown signs of improvement in recent years but still 50% target seems far to achieve.

Interview with Mayur Gupta: Study Days @ IIITM Gwalior : A jaunty Journey …

Mayur Gupta:On receiving our questionnaire, Mayur's answer was, "Why us ? we are the youngest alumni whose one leg is still in IIITM [:O] ."
Honest answer: you are The Latest !

It took thousand lines of chat(not code :P) to turn him on for the interview [;)].
There are a lot more to write about him than he written for prescribed questions.
He is one of the first timers of IIITM. He is first certified designer of IIITM ([;)] 3 infotsav, 3 aurora), one of the most 'talked about' persons in media during his days @ IIITM, the youngest entrepreneur, the top downlaoder[;)]...

Finally thanks to Mayur sir and team for giving the current shape of IIITM Incubation Center.

Sidhi Baat (The Interview):

Name:Mayur Gupta
Batch: IPG2004
Location: Searching ... (presently in vizag)
Organization: placed in ITC Infotech, looking for others ...

Q.1. Your Intro ? (the first question for every IIITMite in so called intro :))
Mayur:
yes sir kyun nahi
my name : Mayur Gupta
Age: 23 yrs
Sex: Male
Orientation: Straight
Height: 5'6"
Batch: IPG2004 ... (recession hit batch :P )
Area : :-? yeh kya hota hai bhai ... maine apna area kabhi measure nahi kiya

anyways .. jokes apart i am a successful experiment of IIITM Gwalior by finally completing my Mtech.

Q. 2. Define IIITM in your word?
Mayur:
IIITM ... well i thought it was ABV-IIITM for the past 5 yrs ... damn.... why was i not aware of the change ...

anyways IIITM ... a mix of IIT and IIM as we heard it was when we joined here ... later on after 5 yrs of being in this institute i guess it is a mix of the things which are absent in both the IIT and IIM :)

its a good place if u want to do something with ur life ... anything can be counted in for it ... like becoming the laziest person in the batch ... (that would be meee) or becoming the most studious ... (offcourse u know who 'Google').

but the time and the opportunities this institute has given to me is something which cannot be compared to any other institution in any regard as its the only institute where u will find the seniors guiding the juniors as their own brothers and the juniors doing the same by passing on the tradition which is the only thing i guess that has kept the true IIITM Spirit still intact.

Q. 3.The most memorable moment @ IIITM ?
Mayur:
well the whole 5 yrs can be counted in for a memory which can be remembered for a lifetime.
but for some incidents well they count in for a collection...

the most memorable for me is the day when while doing out BTech Project ... P.K.Das sir gave us a warning that if the speech recognition system did not run in the next 24hours then he would be awarding us a D grade for BTP..... at tht time we did not even understand what speech recognition was ... it took a whole night of reading and coding with some tricks too ... but finally we were able to manage making of the system ... but running it was still no way near in the morning. Later in the morning at 6 Bharat, Pranjal,Vidya and myself mailed Das sir regarding all the effort we had taken and the result was still not visible. at 10 am we went to sir with the work and all he did was enter a command ..... thts it .... the system ran ... and was recognizing commands .... :P ...

That was one feeling which became a memory and even today that feeling is living inside all of us.

For me that was one of the most memorable moments

Q. 4.Technology and Management in your words, how it become more special when it comes for IIITM ?
Mayur:
Technology and Management ... well they do not remain the same when they come under the roof of IIITM ... we learn both of the subjects together and expertise ourselves in the common base from where we can rise into both the fields. there is one IT and MBA side to both the branches which this institute has nourished into our minds and it is that factor which makes us more industry oriented than any other course... (IPG offcourse).

For me the love for technology grew in IIITM but also the management did not leave me either ... since i got more experience in the management side of life at IIITM compared to the technical side .. (i don't know programming being an Mtech :P)

Q. 5.Your experience and strategy @ your work place: how did you develop your skills from null to pointer, please give us a biographical detail .
Mayur:
work place ... :( it hurts being one of the recession hit batches and trying to write on this topic ...

still for me my workplace was IIITM and the skills i gathered there was by learning from others ... i still remember the 5th yr seniors Sharat sir, Pushkar sir, RP sir and rajiv sir who taught us about the basics of Linux, programming and operating systems which till date are the only things i feel i learned in IIITM and still is the most useful.

I personally feel that when you are guided in the right path by the right persons then you do turn out to learn a lot, and in the process gain experience which is carried froward to the juniors.

From P.K.Das sir i personally feel he is the person who made me what i am ... because during the Btech project the experience i have gained from him is something which is irreplaceable. The journey of the learning has not been something i cherish but the learning i have had from my seniors and Das sir is something i will call as my best time in IIITM.

Q. 6. A message to your all juniors, (something you aspired most @ IIITM and want the same in your juniors) …
Mayur:
well ... this is the section which should be skipped since there wont be anything productive except for the routine dialogues like
read the subjects, attend classes, score good, prepare aptitude, read novels .... u will be successful .... i hate this crap ..

if you want to do something forget it all ... reading books is a different story ... but if you are interested in any topic then go for it ... read it fully do not think if it relates to your subject or course ... just keep reading and do something in it .... believe me guys ... the more different you are the more you will feel confident about urself.

Give the projects a rest ... take up your own topics and work on them, who says to work on the topics which are always suggested if you have an idea and if it is not being considered even then still look out on net there will be numerous people like you working on that.

The best part of IIITM is that you can read anything anytime and you will still have a lot of time left for BAKAR ...

so juniors ... and the ppl who still feel all the above is crap (in a way it is) ... listen to urself ... and work along .... for support ...

ALUMNI's are always there to guide u dudes ...

Q. 7. IIITM on lighter note: eg: IIITM is getting more greener with times, what do you think ???
Mayur:
Very true .. I remember the days when our batch came .... there were hardly a few inches of greenery just some countable number of trees ... and by the time years passed by the number of trees increased the whole surrounding was improved and the greenery was visible and even more distinct compared to other colleges in the locality.

now that we have moved out ... the situation is lot better than 5 years ago and is going better .... but boys .... do remember "The Grass on the Other Side is Always Greener" .... getting something outside the campus is better ... :P

Don't be stereotype...specially don't follow the crowd...this is from the bunch of CVs I received; every one is a champ in Credit risk ..equity analysis..and portfolio management....no one was focused or different....

My suggestion is to work harder on yourself than you do on your job.....

Q. 7. IIITM on lighter note: eg: IIITM is getting more greener with times, what do you think ???
Abhishek:
Between two evils, I always pick the one I never tried before......

8th Aug'09: Prof. VARUN ARYA in Campus!

The SH2 Syndrome:

SH2 during lecture

around 143 chairs, 3 sofas, 1 podium, 1 LCD projector, fully wired echo proof sound system, one white board, 2 markers with a spare duster in 50'x60' syndicate hall with one Balkishan (:P) have witnessed many speeches on various issues from interfaces of every walk of life. Podium remains the same, people keep changing.

'The SH2 Syndrome' once again witnessed the presence of an eminent personality of education sector in India. Prof. Varun Arya graced the gathering of budding managers on pious evening of Saturday 8th Aug.

Prof. Varun Arya, a product of IIT Delhi and IIM Ahmedabad has over 16 years of experience in the senior positions with the leading companies. He holds a strong expertise in Sales & Marketing, Business Development and Profit Centre (SBUs) Management. For the last eight years he is associated with the shaping up of Aravali Institute of Management as a world-class management institute at Jodhpur in Rajasthan. In this capacity, he has also been the member of the Consultative Committee of FITT (Foundation for Innovation & Technology Transfer), the Institute-Industry interaction wing of IIT Delhi and the Academic Council of Global Business School, New Delhi. He has also been a part of the advisory committee in leading educational institutions and NGO’s. He also imparts his educational and industrial experience to the young minds through his lectures and workshops. Prof. Arya sincerely believes that people who have done well in their career and life should go back to their roots at a suitable time to do something constructive and substantial for their home state. This led to the birth of Aravali Institute of Management (AIM) in April 2000 which is the first management institute in Rajasthan having affiliation to the Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the prestigious IIMs.

Prof. Arya giving lecture

The jammed jamboree of SH2 was hypnotized by inspiring lecture of prof. Arya. The way he was presenting the things with his reallife experiences, we rarely see.

Yesterday when i saw a guest lecture notice in mess notice board, i thought this is going to be another normal boring lecture and hence erased the schedule from my mind just after noticing the notice.

In the evening, around 4 a phone call disturbed me with intimidation to attend the gathering.(Don't ask who intimidated !)
Anyhow i was brought.
Believe me or not the effect of the session on me is so mesmerizing that now I'm feeling happy in spoiling my weekend in silly writing for IIITM blog.

Even if an idealist would remain abuzz on seeing a person for whom president of India make exception. A man who made J.M Lingdoh to do exception for him; A man whose educational initiative has got F.M as no. 4 in BoG members. :O ; A man who has gone everywhere from nowhere; A man who has a novel for every question; A man who bent the tide each time he tried; A man who adamantly says 'no' to a chief minister; A man who made Rahul Bajaj to wear formals for his occasion; A man who used to spent times with Kiran Bedi during her troubled times; A man when her daughter went to an US university for higher education and during introduction she said my name is *** Arya and I'm from Jodhpur, then she was interrupted with reply, "are you daughter of Varun Arya ?".

Director, Prof. S.G Deshmukh presenting the memento to prof. Arya

Prof. Varun Arya is the man of Values, a true face of ethical networking, a man with whom PM wish to spent his spare time, a symbol of simplicity. On entering in SH2 i thought he might be a parent of some newly admitted student :) .

Gosh! i'm on way to finish a novel !
I think i should take a brake.

Keep updating...
Gud nite!

Interview with Dhananjay Kulkarni :Study Days @ IIITM Gwalior : A jaunty Journey …

Dhananjay Dilip Kulkarni: Dhananjay, better known as 'the Euler' of IIITM will always remain a source of inspiration for his juniors. Due to his lucid teaching style he is also known as 'The Professor' and believe me he is more capable in binding students than a regular Prof. I'm still remembering the '64 X 64 Chess board' problem and its '2 X 2', 2 min. soln.[:)] of his lecture on Discrete mathematics class.

On the other note he is a true artisan, a painter. In 'Tabla' he was Zakir Huesen of IIITM. Each year the 'Saiyon Ne' trio of Dhananjay, Sandeep and Ankit has rocked the stage of Aurora.

Sidhi Baat (The Interview):

Name: Dhananjay Dilip Kulkarni
Batch: IPG2002-07-M.Tech
Location: Chennai
Organization: Amazon

Q.1. Your Intro ? (the first question for every IIITMite in so called intro :))
Dhananjay:
IPG 2002; often made the judge of the singing competitions to avoid me participating it and the co-founder of AIFA (All India Fatta Association), a now dormant organization that used to foster budding artists fond of cracking crappy jokes.

Q. 2. Define IIITM in your word?
Dhananjay:
freedom

Q. 3.The most memorable moment @ IIITM ?
Dhananjay:
(Off the records) When I was caught sleeping in my lab. (On the records) Amazing juniors. Each moment with them is a memory.

Q. 4.Technology and Management in your words, how it become more special when it comes for IIITM ?
Dhananjay:
An amazing confluence of the instrument (technology) and the skill to use it (management). Though a very benign thought, it'll need some time to get impressed in the students as well as the industry.

Q. 5.Your experience and strategy @ your work place: how did you develop your skills from null to pointer, please give us a biographical detail .
Dhananjay:
The underlying principle was freedom to study. We got the time to study whatever we wanted. We were never spoon-fed, and often were left to ourselves. That led us to form study groups, and mutual co-operation.

Q. 6. A message to your all juniors, (something you aspired most @ IIITM and want the same in your juniors) …
Dhananjay:
Create a passion for anything, don't let go of it. You'll be benefit from it someday later.

Q. 7. IIITM on lighter note: eg: IIITM is getting more greener with times, what do you think ???
Dhananjay:
No one could (probably) beat the rose gardens we used to have.

Interview with Pawan Verma: Study Days @ IIITM Gwalior : A jaunty Journey …

Pawan:'Pawan' is the synonym of zeal and a symbol of paladin in IIITM. I'm still remembering the night when we tried to bring a revolution in ABVP's way in IIITM and you guided us to our first victim Ashok Jain(the messwala) :).

A lot more has left to share. How can one forget your visionary step of launching IIITM Blog in 2007 on which your own interview is being published ;) .
You are one of the 'First Timers' @ IIITM ...

Sidhi Baat (The Interview):

Name: Pawan Verma
Batch: IPG2002-07-MBA
Location:Atlanta, USA
Organization:General Electric through Satyam !

Q.1. Your Intro ? (the first question for every IIITMite in so called intro :))
Pawan:
During my time with institute, I was carrying a zeal to turn the things upside down and downside up, never to mention that things have not really changed but this has imbibed a fighter in me, so that's how i sum up myself after IIITM, a fighter. Never to give up and 'Just do it'. Btw, later was my byline during insti farewell.

Q. 2. Define IIITM in your word?
Pawan:
Inseparable identity of mine. Have nurtured my values, provided me opportunities and prepared me to take on the world. It's the most laid back time but who said that things can't be easy. Gave me friends and relations for life. I would say everything except deep rigorous knowledge (though our curriculum boast that) but made me smart enough to get that myself. Most rocking place in the world !

Q. 3.The most memorable moment @ IIITM ?
Pawan:
If i look now then it was great journey, with ups and downs. Love and fights, jhappiyan and pappiyan, man, i am getting nostalgic. On serious note, it was my stint with Infotsav in 3rd year which I really chreish, perhaps it has taught me more management than my 2 years of MBA :-P I have never been that passionate in my whole life. Was it just an event ?

Q. 4.Technology and Management in your words, how it become more special when it comes for IIITM ?
Pawan:
Honestly, I have chosen IIITM over other choices owing to this techno-management but could not appreciate this until I joined the Industry. Always thought that people opt for MBA because they want a chillax life :P but yeah now I don't wonder anymore. I see the real time applicability of S/W engineering which I thought is most useless :-| Dude, it's not about developing applications but the whole process and people and other stake factors involved alongside. I believe IIITM is the best institute to get the real Industry knowledge.

Q. 5.Your experience and strategy @ your work place: how did you develop your skills from null to pointer, please give us a biographical detail .
Pawan:
This is interesting. When I joined Satyam, I felt I have come to another IIITM, the same way of working. You have to take up the work, challenge others, fight and get succeed, noone gonna stop you, not sure how things work at other places but I felt that the spirit to get the things right inspite of all tough conditions is what keeps me moving on and I guess, I am doing fair enough :)

Q. 6. A message to your all juniors, (something you aspired most @ IIITM and want the same in your juniors) …
Pawan:
Guys, you are at heaven, drink the life to the fullest Just find out what your goals are and that's your focus and leave rest for others. This is the best place to prepare you on how to become smart ass, no support, no checks (atleast during our time) and you are on your own. If you walk through this smoothly then you can walkthrough the tough journey ahead very easily!

Keep your passion alive !

Q. 7.IIITM on lighter note: eg: IIITM is getting more greener with times, what do you think ???
Pawan:
Man, how much discount are we getting at almost every food joint, coahing institutes, dhabas, gym. It was real hilarious to go for buying a beer bottle and then argue for discount because we were IIITMites. And has the wi-fi and AC come to the hostel? We have spent 5 complete years waiting for that !!!
