IIITM Press release on short term training program(10-14th Aug'09) on software engineering and management(“SEM-09”): Day Four

13th August 2009, Gwalior

The fourth day of MHRD/AICTE sponsored short term training program(10th to 14th August 2009) on software engineering and management(“SEM-09”) at Atal Bihari Vajpayee-Indian Institute of Information Technology & Management, Gwalior (ABV-IIITM, Gwalior), continued with the same vibration as on the previous day. The eminent speakers on the day were Prof. Biswajit Mahanty, from Department of industrial Engineering and Management, IIT-Kharagpur and Prof. Ashok Wahi.

The program covered both the classical approach of software engineering and the more contemporary software project management principles and practices under a single umbrella.
Prof. Biswajit Mahanty talked about the importance of Project management. He showed how the proper project estimation helps in predicting the amount of effort required to develop a software project. He discussed the issues related to schedule pressure and software project management. He showed that schedule pressure is brought about by a variety of factors, such as; lack of experience, amount of re-work, lagging behind the scheduled project completion time, technological changes, discrepancy in estimation of size of the project, effort required etc. He also explained how a software size is a primary cost factor in most software project estimation models.

Prof. Ashok Wahi talked about the software risk management and its solutions. He said that the failure to predict and prevent risk can lead to costly delays, revenue loss, increased stress on team members, a lesser product and even project failure. He did a proper software risk analysis and risk resolution was presented to the participants. The next topic on which he talked was “Challenges of managing large software projects”. He talked on visions like multi-way reviews with management at every stage at frequent intervals, creating cause champions at every section of the process, and optimizing the large scale changes undertaken by adopting business process re-engineering. Some very good tips were also given by him to manage large projects.
After the session, a trip to Gwalior fort was organized for all the speakers and participants of the training program.
